End Poverty NYC: Project Reflection

This February, I was given to project by my technology teacher to digitally advocate for something I wanted to change in my city. I chose to advocate for the impoverished people of New York City. Throughout my life I have seen and met people that have at one point in their lives, had to face the harsh realities of poverty. My overall goal was to try my best to help those people and others just like them in this city so that they can live better lives. I wanted to be able to say that I made a difference in someone’s life. However, I don’t believe that my project was successful. With the small number of views, followers and signatures, my project did not make a difference in someone’s life, as I had hoped.

One reason why my project was not a success was because I was only able to gain a small number of views. For example, my most popular post only gained 19 views on an informational post, most of which were from when it was posted back in February. Also, the post only gained two likes, both of which were from my friends.

My project was also not a success because the low activity on my petition. Throughout the passed three months I only gained six signatures, two from me and four from my friends. Also, my petition has gained no comments and no donations.

Overall, I think this project was a fail. My small number of views and petition signatures are a prime example of this. However, there were steps that I could have taken in order to make the results better. I could have tried to spread the word about my mini-movement more by talking to more people about it, not just close friends and family. Also, to better my blog views I could have written more informational posts, similar to the one with 19 views (“The History Of Poverty In NYC (1900-2019)”). To conclude, my project “End Poverty NYC” did not turn out as planned.

I have only gained 5 signatures on my petition to have Food Bank for New York to create locations in Queens and Staten Island. This petition has been available for the past month and a half. Please sign. The people of Queens and Staten Island NEED your help. They don’t want to starve anymore.

Official Video!!

Welcome back to my website everyone! Here is my new official video for @lowerpovertyratesnyc. Share this video using #end_poverty_ to contribute to the lowering of poverty rates in New York City.

In this video, I discussed the ways New York City is helping and failing to help the impoverished people of our city. I begin by introducing the number of NYC citizens that live in poverty. Next, I discuss 4 of the ways the city helps the poor and how each of them improve their way of life. Finally, I explain that there are still some aspects of impoverished life that there are no changes from New York in the past.

End Poverty NYC Progress!

Throughout the month of March, this blog has undergone tremendous success. With a total of 94 views, we have seen a 416.7% increase from the view total in February (16).

However, my individual blog posts have had very few views. The highest total views for a post was my last post “Helping Is The Right Thing To Do” with a total of 9 views. Whereas, the highest total views of a post in the previous month was 10. This was a 10% decrease from February.

Despite all of this, I am confident that this site will thrive in the month of April and experience larger viewer numbers.

Keep spreading the message and sharing #end_poverty_ to gain more viewers. Also follow @lowerpovertyratesnyc on Instagram for more info.

Types of Poverty

In today’s society, everyone refers to themselves as poor, without being in actual poverty. Just because you do not have enough money to purchase something at the time being, does not mean you are poor. We as a society throw the word “poverty” around without actually LIVING in poverty.

In our time today Poverty is rather significantly high in the Philippines and in other countries. You need money to buy food. You need money to send your own kids to school and to go to other places. Basically, you need money to survive in this harsh world. These are all costs of being poor. You cannot do or should I say cannot do what you ‘need’ or wants to be able to simply because you are poor. Those people who are barely able to pay for food and shelter simply can’t consider these other expenses.  When people are excluded within a society, when they are not well educated and when they have a higher incidence of illness, there are negative consequences for society. and could cause a social barrier between the people in the vicinity.
